I have always believed that the goal of art was the art itself.
The art for art’s sake, art that stays to art, art less art and even more. The possible operations with the same goal were endless.
Maramotti Collection presents “Purpose”, the first European exhibition of Anna Conway.

In the historical venue of the company Max Mara in Reggio Emilia, art is in open dialogue with art. From Francis Bacon to Bill Viola and Gilberto Zorio: art history of the last half of the last century welcomes the 21st century innovations. One room hosts last edition’s winner of “Max Mara Art Prize for Women in collaboration with Whitchapel Gallery”; a section is dedicated to “Industrial Imaginary”; one last wing houses “Purpose”.

I enter the painting.
I do not open doors, I just try to turn on a switch.

“It’s not / going to / happen like / that”, a typical post-Morandi still life. Anna Conway does not use preparatory drawings. When she has to start a work, she imagines the sound in the painting to choose the atmosphere or the first color to use. The artist knows her subjects’ lives, questions about the importance of their existences. Her images are mental places where real life meets the dream time.

I see a man in the distance, alone under a gray sky in a bare space, lying on a cot. The only touch of color is given by the sequoia forest on the wall bearing the word “RESOLVE”.
I imagine the sound produced by the flock of birds accompanying his sleep. The sense of alienation is emphasized by the outbreak of the giant white billboard as the sky. The man of “Devotion” is a farmer or a modern breeder who takes care of a herd of cattle for the food industry.

White is the office of “Perseverance”, a totally sterile and empty space were it not for the picture-in-picture depicting the Easter Island statues. With “Determination”, I get to the pitch darkness of a metropolitan apartment. Perfect counterpoint to the previous pallor. Of pharaonic eco is the largest ship of “Potential” dominating the scene. A large green lawn, a decommissioned warship, a Sphinx, an artist’s sculpture?

”Potential”, “perseverance”, “determination”, “devotion” are not only four “motivational” titles of the oil paintings on canvas by Anna Conway: they are four key principles of the current human affairs.

All we can do is wonder about the Vincenzo Agnetti’s words that seem almost to create a palindrome: “Given two work- instants there will always be a work-duration containing the given moments”.

“From Generation to Generation” by Kaarina Kaikkonen is the woven wave of a man’s jacket that “breaks” on the floor. Wear is the cornerstone of Lara Favaretto’s work. In “Gummo III”, a metal surface is covered by five car wash brushes. I remain hypnotized – not worn – as part of a process of which we all are children.

Elisabetta Benassi through “Make War Together, Make Peace Together”, teaches us the true meaning of “common”. I get to the “Small Factory” by Krištof Kintera. And the toxic cloud of modernity collides with the echo of the ready-made reminding Duchamp.

The last work with which the path ends in an open dialogue is the work by Paolo Grassino, where the primal scene may represent a new world of potential, perseverance, determination, devotion. “Analgesia” is the lack in experiencing pain towards other people’s conditions. For Paolo Grassino it is a dark, black feeling, that takes the form of a dogs army. They remain aseptic, motionless, heedless of my presence.

No one knows what the fate of the world will be, the only certainty is that art in all its creations will always have the aim of prefigure it.
